University of Nevada Las Vegas Athletics

UNLV Athletics has officially launched UNLV Championship Resources, a new fundraising initiative designed to support Rebel student-athletes through a university-administered NIL revenue-sharing model.

Created in response to the 2025 House vs. NCAA settlement, Championship Resources ensures a seamless transition for those who previously supported the Friends of UNILV Collective into a newly mandated structure that allows institutions to directly acquire, administer, and compensate student-athletes for their name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights.

The initiative supports more than 500 Rebel student-athletes across all varsity programs.

"Championship Resources represents the next evolution of competitive success at UNLV," said Erick Harper, UNLV's Director of Athletics. "This program allows us to directly invest in our student-athletes while empowering our coaches to recruit and retain elite talent in an increasingly competitive national landscape."

The primary focus of Championship Resources is to secure external investment that provides annual revenue distribution to Rebel student-athletes. A secondary focus is to strengthen every varsity program by equipping head coaches with the resources necessary to attract and develop championship-caliber talent.

As supporters in UNLV Championship Resources, donors become directly connected to the development, success, and future of Rebel Athletics, fueling conference championships, NCAA appearances, and title pursuits.

Why these programs would leave the Big 12 for the PAC makes zero sense to me.

In a nutshell, the judge threw out the MWC's counterclaim that the Pac committed fraud. But the MWC's two other counterclaims, that the Pac committed tortious interference and was unjustly enriched by its actions, are still alive. Not a clear win for the MWC since the surviving counterclaims will continue to be litigated. But not the news the Pac was hoping for either.

I think if anything this should increase impetus toward a settlement.

A beloved figure in Rebel history, Rothermel served as the school's director of athletics for 10 years from 1981-1990 and steered UNLV to unprecedented success in every sport, most notably the men's basketball national championship won by legendary head coach Jerry Tarkanian in 1990.

During Rothermel's tenure, 14 varsity programs reached NCAA postseason play and Rebel teams won a total of 33 conference championships. That list included the 1984 football team, which won its first league title and bowl game under head coach Harvey Hyde. Rothermel also orchestrated the Runnin' Rebels' move from the Las Vegas Convention Center into the Thomas & Mack Center, which opened in 1983. He is credited with hiring two other Hall of Fame coaches who built powerhouse programs for the Scarlet & Gray -- Dwaine Knight, who would go on to win the 1998 NCAA men's golf championship, and Shan McDonald, who guided Rebel softball to three trips to the Women's College World Series.

Rothermel earned his bachelor's degree in education from Northern Illinois in 1960, received his master's from Illinois in 1961 and then his doctorate in 1965. He went on to work at Kansas State University and then West Virginia University before moving his family to Las Vegas. He was inducted into the UNLV Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.

-256 schools get in. Standard bracket created.

-That extra week of the NCAAT replaces the old conference tournaments.

-First week is hosted by schools. Second week and beyond is same as current model.

-If you win your conference you get to host the first week. Your seed doesn't change (ie if you are ranked #220 you would be a four seed in your four time pod that first week) but you are assure you would get to host. Otherwise the host go off rankings. This year there are 19 conference regular season winners that would rated outside the top 64 of net. There are 4 more that are rated between 45-64. Those 23 schools host plus the top 41 schools in NET host. These number could change year to year but would probably be around this. Schools 1-41 get to host a bracket. Schools 42-64 would still be the 1 seed in there 4 team pod but would be shipped to one of the 23 schools that won their regular season conference and get to host a pod.

-After week 1 it is just a standard 64 team bracket. You could reside or you could just kept the 256 team bracket. I would prefer to kept the original 256 bracket but could also see the rationale of reseeding at that point just cause of the logistics.

This way you reward the little guys and at least give them a chance in there 4 team pod they host. I mean they would be playing a school that is ranked in the 42-64 range so it is not like they are playing a title contender so they would have a chance to make the final 64.

Plus everyone else can try for top 40 in the NET to basically assure themselves a host spot that first weekend.
